Heather Honey Supporting the Heather Trust

The Heather Trust

The Heather Trust is a charity, established in the 1980s, initially aimed to balance grouse and sheep farming interests on UK moorlands. Today, The Heather Trust has broadened it’s focus to champion the wider values of heather moorland habitats. Focusing on understanding and integrating economic, social, and environmental needs, striving to manage moorlands efficiently, effectively, and sensitively. Protecting moorlands and uplands for future generations.

Over many years The Heather Trust has supported and commissioned an important range of moorland research projects – each one providing vital information that was not known before.

The Heather Trust continue this programme of research today, by identifying key areas of research and being heavily involved in diseminating findings of research to land managers, practitioners, and lobbying policy makers for future research projects.

Sales of The Heather Trust jars of honey will go directly to helping to further the great work undertaken by The Heather Trust.

The Role of Northumberland Honey Co in The Heather Trust

As beekeepers we are seeing first hand, the devastation caused by Heather Beetle and climate change on the Heather Moorland, and subsequently the available forage/ flowers for bees. We are determined to find out more information about what is causing the heather beetle issue as if this continues it may well be the case that we can no longer produce heather honey… absolutely devastating to think…

The value to the beefarming / beekeeping economy of Heather Honey is huge, being one of the most highly prized honey that a beekeeper can produce, with some of the best health benefits too. We are steadfast in our approach to help protect the ennvironment, whilst working with organisation like The Heather Trust to find out answers to questions we simply do not know the answers to without significant research projects.

The sales of these Heather Trust jars will help us get underway with our aim to help fund a research project into the link between Heather Beetle and Heather Honey production. The issue being presently we do not fully understand the severity of the link between Heather Beetle and Heather Honey production, but what we do know is that on damaged moors it can take 5-10 years for the Heather to return, and in that time many bee farmers may go out of business, or heather honey may not be able to be produced if the Heather Beetle impacts a wide area.

Storing and Using Heather Honey

Heather honey is cold processed retaining the raw and natural properties of the honey. Heather honey naturally has a higher water content that all other honey, and this water content is what makes all honey liable to ferment. With heather the risk of fermentation is greater, it is just a fact of honey life!

Therefore we recommend to keep the honey cool, and in a dry place. Even at room temperature honey can ferment, so the best thing to do is use the honey when as fresh as possible. After all, when the honey is in the jar it is ready to eat, it doesn’t get better with age like a fine wine!
