Description
Sweet Mead – Traditional Northumberland Heather Honey Mead
Discover the rich, distinctive character of our Traditional Sweet Mead, handcrafted in Northumberland using heather moorland honey harvested from our own bees.
Beautifully golden, wonderfully rich and full of honey character, this traditional still mead celebrates one of the world’s oldest fermented drinks, combining generations of family beekeeping with internationally award-winning mead-making expertise.
A Traditional Mead Made with Northumberland Heather Honey
Our sweet mead begins on the wild Northumberland moors, where our honeybees gather nectar from ling and bell heather, alongside willowherb and other moorland wildflowers.
Harvested during the late summer, this distinctive honey is renowned for its depth of flavour and aromatic character, providing the foundation for our rich, traditional honey wine.
Unlike meads made using commercially sourced honey, we produce the honey ourselves, caring for our bees and following the journey from flower to hive, honey harvest and finished bottle.
What Does Sweet Mead Taste Like?
Our traditional sweet mead is a still, full-flavoured honey wine with a rich sweetness and the characteristic depth of Northumberland heather honey.
Rather than the bubbles of sparkling mead, this traditional style allows the honey’s natural character to take centre stage.
Its rich flavour makes it a lovely choice for those who enjoy sweet dessert wines, while offering something distinctive for experienced mead enthusiasts.
What Is Mead?
Mead is an alcoholic drink traditionally made by fermenting honey with water and yeast. Often referred to as honey wine, mead has been enjoyed for thousands of years across many cultures.
Mead can be still or sparkling, dry or sweet, with the honey used playing an important role in its flavour.
Our Traditional Sweet Mead follows this heritage, using Northumberland heather honey to create a distinctly British expression of this ancient drink.
How to Enjoy Traditional Sweet Mead
We recommend serving our sweet mead lightly chilled in a small wine glass.
Enjoy it on its own as an after-dinner drink, alongside a cheeseboard, or with desserts where its rich honey character can be appreciated.
From Our Family’s Bees to Your Glass
Hutch Family Mead is produced by Northumberland Honey Company, our family-run bee farm and meadery based in Haltwhistle, Northumberland.
We manage hundreds of honeybee colonies across the region, producing our own British honey and breeding our own queen bees.
By combining our honey production with specialist mead-making expertise, we create distinctive meads that celebrate the landscapes, flowers and bees of Northumberland.
