Beeswax Candle Benefits

It is thought that when burnt beeswax candles release negative ions, with the burning process of beeswax candles thought to be the mechanism by which they remove toxins / odours from the air.

It is widely reported that beeswax candles help remove odour from the house, particularly useful for the kitchen, and those wishing to burn more pure wax candles.

When choosing a candle to burn, selecting a natural wax candle such as beeswax is thought to give a better indoor air quality than that of heavily scented candles. (Hyunjun, Y. et al 2025)

Scented candles, when using improperly refined wax materials, are known to emit particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and even formaldehyde during combustion (Cattaneo, A. et al 2014) (Jeong-Hyeon Ahn et al 2015)

The key message when choosing candles to burn appears to be that choosing a natural wax candle – such as beeswax, and good-quality wicks such as pure cotton wicks also commonly found in beeswax candles, can significantly reduce your indoor exposure to harmful particles.(Wang et al., 2021; Shin et al., 2025)

Beeswax Candles versus Scented Candles?

Scented candles are very widely available, but often have low quality or even undefined ingredients. There are studies suggesting that public health authorities should be warned that regular indoor candle burning with scented candles could be dangerous in terms of exposure to organic pollutants. (Wang et al., 2021; Shin et al., 2025)

Candle chemicals and fragrances are well-known to be asthma and allergy irritants. (Al Khathlan, N et al 2023)

Given the warnings well published, it would be wise for asthma and allergy sufferers to avoid heavily scented candles, and instead choose natural wax candles such as those made from beeswax in order for asthma and allergy sufferers to reduce their exposure to pollutants from scented candles. (Nazir, Z et al 2024)

    I went looking for UK made beeswax candles for myself to use in the bathroom at night, candles not made with petrochemicals and other toxins. I found them here at Northumberland Honey. The candles are really lovely, burn slowly, a beautiful warm glow from the candle and they smell gently of honey too.     Traditionally made, and made with love. Beeswax candles are unlike other candles, so be sure to read a little into them before using them. That being said, they are great!
