Bees and Beekeeping for TV and Film
Since 2015 we have been providing bees, beekeeping and beehives for TV and film.
Ensuring that all health and safety and risk assessments are in place, producing the most docile bees to work with during the demanding TV and filming workflows.
See below for some highlights of the work we have done for TV and film in beekeeping, including being Robson Green’s beekeeper!
Robson Green's Beekeeper
Robson Green is local to our business near Hexham, so it made perfect sense when he approached us to mentor him in the craft of beekeeping for us to help him get started with beekeeping in his own garden.
Our beekeeping mentorship is currently ongoing, and we hope one day Robson will take on the ancient craft of beekeeping from his very own garden! He has been a great student who clearly has great compassion for all things wild and natural so beekeeping we feel is a perfect fit for Robson and we’re priviledged to be an integral part of Robson Green’s beekeeping journey.
Robsons Green Walking Hadrian's Wall
During Robson Green’s first visit to Northumberland Honey Company we took Robson to look at Heather Honey production on the Northumberland fells.
During this first visit we learnt the process and timescales involved in filming and the importance of scene planning with bees to get the best shots possible, considering lighting, weather conditions and appropriate positioning of hives to allow for film crew access and composition.
There was planning involved with bee movements on the truck and loader, health and safety compliance, ensuring full risk assessments were in place and the crew and cast were all briefed on the health and safety requirements for filming around bees.
We had undertaken smaller TV and film projects prior to this, but this was our first more major production, appearing on Channel 5, prime time.
Robsons Green's Weekend Escapes
Robson Green visited us for a second time as part of ‘Weekend Escapes’ with his Uncle Matheson.
Robson and Matheson visited us during August to film heather honey production on the Northumberland Heather moors, and sampled the products produced from the heather honey, including sparkling mead and heather honey put together as a lovely ‘beekeepers picnic’.
The production of this sequence involved planning around heather flowering for the best visual effect, access permissions to some of the most stunning scenary in Northumberland. Early morning movement of bees scheduled around availability of film crew and Robson.
It was re-assuring to hear of the reasons for coming back to us for filming in that we kept docile bees which were ideal for filming, and are knowledgable on the processes involved in media production. The whole process from start to finish was seamless and natural.
Beekeeping in the News
Bees and Beekeeping are always popular news stories.
With our heavy involvement in the beekeeping industry from Luke’s involvement as Vice Chair of The Bee Farmers Association (2025-2027) to Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers, we are frequently asked for our opinion and input into news and media surrounding bees, beekeeping and bee farming in the UK.
Suzie is also in demand with her constant product development and innovation driven by her science background and science PhD. Suzie is in demand for topics around product development in beekeeping and honey, business women leaders in industry, uplands and the countryside.
From BBC local news on Look North to coverage on BBC Breakfast News we have seen small stories regarding our issues faced with bees, beekeeping and the environment reaching national news and press outlets.
