'The Ultimate Guide to Leather Care. Utilising the power of beeswax, the sustainability of nature, leather has never been better cared for"
How to Care for Leather
Discover the Northumberland Honey Co Leather Care system and learn how best to care for leather using natural saddle soap, and leather balm.
Used together, the leather care system that is Northumberland Honey Co Saddle Soap and Leather Balm will prove as versatile as the leather it’s used on.
If you have invested in a pair of quality leather walking boots to take you on adventures across all terrains you will find regular treatment will improve their fit and performance, the beeswax providing a natural, waterproof barrier and preventing cracking and drying.
The end result may require a little elbow grease but gives you a product far superior to anything a man-made material could produce.
How to Use Saddle Soap
Simply whip up into a light lather with a wet, soft brush or sponge and gently clean the leather with a swirling motion, then wipe away residual soap with a soft, dry cloth.

How to Use Leather Balm
Once clean and nourished with a beeswax saddle soap, an application of our beeswax and lanolin leather balm will provide a waterproof, protective layer that deeply nourishes while conditioning. After cleaning, apply sparingly with a soft, dry cloth to the pre-cleaned leather and allow to absorb for no less than five but ideally twenty minutes, then buff off any excess.

Equine Use Case Study
As our case study, Ella Pigg Equine Body Worker and Eventer points out, when dealing with equine leather care, the quality of your maintenance products is also a safety issue. Ella says, “My favourite phase of eventing is definitely Cross Country as it’s fast and challenging. It’s extremely important to look after my leather saddlery and tack as I do not want a stirrup leather or rein to snap during one of my events… especially during Cross Country!”
Ella grew up in the saddle on her family farm in Northumberland and competes regularly as an Eventer. She has managed to turn her equine talent into a successful business, providing therapeutic bodywork sessions to all types of horses in a variety of different disciplines – from pleasure horses to event horses, racehorses and games ponies to help them feel at their best for racing and competition.
A competition week will regularly see Ella preparing five sets of saddles and tack, which must all be cleaned and conditioned before and after the event.
Ella says, “In my care products I look for ease and speed of application. I like my tack to look as good as new and feel flexible and moist after cleaning, so I know the leather is healthy from the use of the product. I love the Northumberland Honey Co. Saddle Soap and the Leather Balm makes my boots look like new.”
